Commonly Asked Acura Questions and Answers
What does it mean when my Acura’s Maintenance Minder shows a code like "A1" or "B2"?
This is Acura’s smart maintenance system designed to tell you exactly what your vehicle needs and when. It’s simpler than it looks:
- The Letter: Refers to the main service type. ‘A’ is a simple oil change, while ‘B’ is more comprehensive, including an oil and filter change, brake inspection, and a detailed chassis and suspension check.
- The Number: Refers to a specific sub-service. For example, ‘1’ means “Tire Rotation,” ‘2’ means “Replace Engine and Cabin Air Filters,” and ‘3’ means “Replace Transmission Fluid.” So, a code like “B1” simply means your vehicle needs the main ‘B’ service along with a tire rotation. We are fully equipped to decode and perform all required Maintenance Minder services.
When does the timing belt need to be replaced on my Acura V6 engine, and why is it so important?
For most Acura J-series V6 engines (found in popular models like the MDX and TLX), the timing belt service is a critical maintenance item typically due around 7 years or 105,000 miles. This is arguably the most important major service you will perform. These are “interference” engines, which means if the timing belt were to snap, the pistons would collide with the valves, causing catastrophic and extremely expensive engine damage. The service involves replacing not just the belt, but also the water pump (which is driven by the belt) and the tensioner. It’s a vital investment in your engine’s long-term health.
Since Acura is Honda’s luxury brand, can Honda parts be used on my Acura?
Because Acura and Honda share many of the same platforms, engines, and transmissions, a large number of underlying mechanical parts are identical. A part sold as “Genuine Honda” is often the exact same component as one sold as “Genuine Acura,” just with a different price tag. As an independent shop, we have the expertise and sourcing ability to use high-quality OEM parts—often from the very same manufacturer that supplies both Honda and Acura—to provide a repair that is identical in quality to the dealership’s but at a much better value.
Will having my new Acura serviced at your independent shop affect my factory warranty?
No, your warranty is completely safe with us. It is a common misconception that you must use the dealership for maintenance to keep your warranty valid. Federal law, specifically the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, protects your right to have your vehicle serviced at any qualified repair shop. We protect your investment by using high-quality parts that meet or exceed Acura’s specifications and by meticulously following (and documenting) all factory-recommended service intervals.
Is it more affordable to service my Acura here than at the dealership, and do you use Genuine Acura parts?
Yes, choosing our shop is typically more cost-effective. The savings come from two places: more competitive labor rates due to our lower overhead, and flexibility in parts sourcing. We can absolutely source “Genuine Acura” parts from the dealership for you. However, to provide the best value, we often recommend using OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts, which are identical in quality but come without the dealership’s markup. We always discuss these options with you upfront to find the best solution for your budget.
What is the service experience like at your shop compared to a large Acura dealership?
Our service experience is built on direct communication and trust. At a large dealership, your contact is usually a service advisor who acts as a middleman between you and the technician. Here, you’ll speak directly with our knowledgeable Service Manager who understands the technical aspects of your vehicle and works closely with our technicians. This ensures your concerns are understood correctly, our findings are explained clearly, and a personal relationship is built. We believe this direct approach leads to a more transparent and confidence-inspiring service experience.
