Common Acura Issues We Repair
Acuras utilize high-pressure mechanical systems and electronic components that often require more frequent maintenance than standard vehicles. At Brisbon Automotive, we focus on specific technical failures in the drivetrain, suspension, and electrical modules. By addressing these known fail points, we help you maintain the vehicle’s performance and avoid the high costs associated with complete system failures.
MDX & RDX
The MDX and RDX models are equipped with advanced all-wheel-drive systems and V6 engines that have specific service intervals. The Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system relies on clutch packs that are sensitive to fluid temperature and contamination. Additionally, the V6 engines in these models use a mechanical timing belt system rather than a chain, which requires preventative replacement to ensure the engine remains timed correctly.
- SH-AWD Rear Differential Service: This differential uses fluid to manage the engagement of the rear clutches. Over time, the fluid breaks down and loses its lubricating properties, leading to a “chatter” or vibration during tight turns. We perform a full fluid exchange using Acura-specific fluid to stop the noise and prevent clutch wear.
- Active Damper System (ADS): Many MDX and RDX trims use electronic shocks that adjust damping levels based on sensor data. These shocks are prone to internal seal leaks. When the fluid leaks out, the vehicle loses its ability to dampen road impact, resulting in an unstable or harsh ride. We replace these electronic units and recalibrate the system to restore factory handling.
- V6 Timing Belt & Water Pump: Acura V6 engines are “interference” engines, meaning the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different times. The timing belt keeps them synchronized. We recommend replacing the belt, tensioner, and water pump every 100,000 miles. If the belt fails, the valves will strike the pistons, causing internal engine destruction.
TLX, TL, & TSX
Acura sedans frequently encounter issues with hydraulic steering components and front suspension bushings. Because these cars are tuned for firmer handling, the rubber components in the suspension are under higher stress than those in a standard sedan. We also find that the electronic convenience modules in these models can stay energized when the vehicle is off, leading to repeated battery failures.
- Power Steering Leaks: Older Acura sedans often develop a high-pitched whine during cold starts. This is usually caused by a hardened O-ring on the inlet pipe that allows air to enter the power steering pump. Replacing the O-ring and the high-pressure hose prevents the pump from burning out due to aeration.
- Compliance Bushings: The front lower control arms use large rubber compliance bushings to absorb road shock. These bushings are a high-wear item and frequently tear or crack. If you experience a thumping sound over bumps or irregular tire wear, we replace these bushings to realign the suspension.
- Hands-Free Link (HFL) Battery Drain: The Bluetooth (HFL) module can fail internally and continue to draw power after the ignition is turned off. This parasitic drain will deplete a battery within 24 hours. We use a multimeter to confirm the draw and can disconnect or replace the module to stop the battery drain.
Integra & RSX
These models utilize the K-series and other high-revving four-cylinder engines. These engines rely on high oil pressure to engage the variable valve timing (VTEC) system. As these vehicles age, the gaskets and seals responsible for maintaining that pressure often fail. We also service the manual transmission components that are prone to wear under spirited driving conditions.
- VTEC Solenoid Leaks: The VTEC solenoid is mounted to the cylinder head and is a common source of oil leaks. The internal screen and gasket become brittle over time, allowing oil to seep onto the engine block. We replace these gaskets to maintain proper oil pressure for the timing system.
- Clutch & Shifter Linkage: Manual transmission models can become difficult to shift if the master or slave cylinders develop internal leaks. We also replace worn shifter bushings and adjust the linkage to ensure the transmission enters gear smoothly without grinding.
Technical Maintenance and Repairs
We perform maintenance based on the specific mechanical requirements of the Acura brand. We use diagnostic tools to read the vehicle’s onboard computer and ensure every repair meets factory specifications.
- Brake Rotor Resurfacing: Acura’s high-performance brake pads generate significant heat, which can cause the brake rotors to develop thickness variations. This results in a shaking steering wheel or a pulsing brake pedal. We resurface or replace these with high-carbon rotors to eliminate the vibration.
- Acura-Specific Fluid Exchanges: Acura transmissions and differentials are designed to work with specific fluid viscosities. We use the exact fluids required for Dual-Clutch Transmissions (DCT) and SH-AWD systems to prevent gear slippage and internal wear.
- Maintenance Minder Decoding: We follow the Acura Maintenance Minder system. If your dash displays a code like B16 or A12, we perform the exact sequence of inspections and part replacements required by the manufacturer.
Next Step: Does your Acura have a leaking power steering hose or a Maintenance Minder light on the dash? Bring it to Brisbon Automotive for a technical diagnosis and an honest quote.
