Is a coolant flush really necessary?

Yes, it is a vital maintenance service. Over time, the anti-corrosion additives in your coolant break down. A flush removes the old fluid and any contaminants and replenishes the system with fresh coolant, protecting your radiator and engine from the inside out.

My car isn’t overheating, but I smell something sweet. What is that?

The sweet smell is the distinct scent of ethylene glycol, the primary component of most engine coolants. Even if you don’t see a large puddle, this smell indicates a small coolant leak somewhere in the system that should be addressed before it gets worse.

Can I just use water instead of coolant?

You should only use water in a short-term emergency to get to a repair shop. Water has a much lower boiling point than coolant, offers no corrosion protection, and can freeze and crack your engine block in winter. A proper 50/50 mix of distilled water and coolant is essential.
